Linked Data & Next Generation Catalogs
“Linked data,” a recommended best practice for exposing, sharing and connecting pieces of data information and knowledge on the Semantic Web, is expected to be fully embraced by the next generation catalogs already in the later stages of development. During this session, attendees will learn about the basic concepts of linked data and the impacts and benefits of adapting linked data in the area of future bibliographical control. To supplement our discussion, developers from a few next generation catalog systems will demonstrate their implementations of linked data.

Lori Takeuchi, director of research, at the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, will present on the “Family Matters” report issued in June 2011. The report shares results from a survey of more than 800 parents of children ages 3 through 10 and reveals how parents nationwide feel about raising children in a digital age. Lori will share in-depth case studies on how parents’ attitudes toward technology, along with family values, routines, and structures, are shaping young children’s experiences using digital media. A brief address from AASL President, Carl A. Harvey II, will precede Lori’s presentation.
Addressing Global Diversity: Meeting the Needs of International Students in Academic Libraries
Addressing Global Diversity Program Description International student enrollment in higher education in the United States reached an all-time high of 723,277 students in 2011. This panel presentation will provide various perspectives on meeting the unique needs of international students in academic libraries. The panelists will represent several types of institutions and will discuss ways of effectively improving programs and services, developing partnerships with other campus units, and raising staff awareness of cross-cultural issues.
