ALCTS rDA Worldwide Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new guidelines for library cataloging and metadata creation, is intended for use in an international context. RDA is also very much a work in progress. To what extent has RDA succeeded in going beyond AACR2’s Anglo-American context? How is implementation now proceeding in different world regions, and what are the potential impacts on developments in the United States? This panel discussion will present multiple perspectives on these unfolding questions. Subjects: Cataloging, Guidelines and Standards, Technical Services, Metadata ALSC the new nonfiction: What is it, and Does it matter? What makes for excellence in nonfiction for young readers? We’re used to looking for reliability, utility, narrative skill, and clear, attractive illustration. But given new realities of access to information, questions of authority and context, standardized testing, and emerging core requirements emphasizing critical thinking and language arts, are these still the most important criteria? This panel will debate a new framework for understanding, creating, evaluating and using the new nonfiction...and maybe even define it. Although the merits of leaving a large publisher package can be debated, reductions in library funding have left some with no other choice.
