ALSC ALsc 101 If you’re new to ALSC or if this is your first Annual Conference as a children’s librarian, then this program is for you! We’ll provide you with information about the perks of ALSC membership, tips on how to get involved, and tricks of the trade for navigating Annual Conference. We’ll also be raffling off a Nook and a Book and tickets to the Newbery-Caldecott Banquet to lucky ALSC members courtesy of the Friends of ALSC! Subjects: Children’s Services, Networking, Youth Services, Children’s Literature ALSC exploring rainbow family collections Rainbow Families are increasing throughout the country. Children with same-sex parents live in 96 percent of all counties nationwide and more than 6 million children live with a parent who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer/ questioning (LGBTQ). With the recent increase in children’s picture books with LGBTQ topics, how can librarians decide which books are the best for their collections and programs? This session describes criteria for selecting children’s books with LGBTQ content, highlights outstanding titles, and provides suggestions for connecting these books with Rainbow Families. Subjects: Children’s Services, Children’s Services, Public Programs, Advocacy, Collection Development ALSC Writing about War for young People: three Writers, three Wars The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) and the Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC) are pleased to present a panel of three outstanding authors whose books are set during three different wars—World War I, World War II, and the war in Afghanistan. Panel members Monika Schroder, Ruta Sepetys, and Trent Reddy will relate the “stories behind the stories” of their books along with difficulties encountered in writing about this topic for young people. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions of panel participants. Free bookmarks listing 2012 USBBY Outstanding International Books will be available.
