AFL-APALA/ AFL-REFORMA APALA and reformA President’s Program This program focuses on the impact and future of Graphic Novels, Comics, and Magazines written primarily for and by Asian, Latino, and African-American authors, featuring David Inocencio, co-founder of “The Beat Within – A Weekly Publication of Writing and Art From the Inside”; Keith Knight, award-winning author of “The Weekly K Chronicles”; Rebecca Marrell, Diversity Resident Librarian, Western Libraries in Bellingham, WA, and Jason Shiga, awardwinning author of Empire State: A Love Story (or not). Sponsored by the Asian/Pacific Americans Librarians Association (APALA),www.apalaweb.org and National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA),www.reforma.org. ALA-IR Digital humanities in eurasia The program Digital Humanities in Eurasia will examine the development and use of e-resources in the humanities that focus on the countries of Eurasia. The speakers will include both Eurasian scholars; and librarians from the region, who use these resources on a daily basis. The speakers will highlight opportunities to teach about the region using digital learning objects, open source digital projects, pathfinders and other electronic resources. The program is aimed at the non-specialist who is interesting in enhancing the globalization and internationalization of their libraries by learning about electronic resources available for the study of Eurasia. Subjects: International Issues AFL-REFORMA recruitment for Latino Library & information Professionals Latino higher education enrollment is predicted to increase by 40% in the next decade. Educators and leaders from several diversity initiatives will discuss issues and challenges of recruiting Latino LIS professionals and programs to overcome those challenges. Subjects: Library School Education, Multicultural Services, Diversity, Recruitment ALA-PPOPCPAC / ALA-PPO muslim Lives and culture: collection Development and Programming Grants The Muslim Lives and Cultures Bookshelf is an NEH initiative, co-presented with ALA, that seeks to increase Americans’ understanding of the rich cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations around the world by providing public libraries with a new set of resources, vetted by scholars, that will introduce Muslim cultures to Americans and foster appreciation of the pluralism of cultural forms and traditions within the Muslim world. Attend this session to learn more about applying for the collection and developing related community programs.
