RUSA Offers Many Opportunities for Networking in Las Vegas

Friday June 27

The Reference User Services Association (RUSA) will host RUSA 101, a networking and orientation event for librarians working in adult services, reference, reader's advisory, collection development, genealogy, resource sharing, and technology. New members of RUSA looking for their “home” within the division, nonmembers interested in learning more about the division, and current members with experience to share are all encouraged to attend this event on Friday, June 27 from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, room S222.

Each special interest section will be represented at this event. Make your way to the table to meet others with your shared interests:

BRASS: Business Reference and Services Section

CODES: Collection Development and Evaluation Section (adult readers advisory, collection development)

HS: History Section (genealogy, archives)

MARS: Emerging Technologies in Reference Section (everything tech and reference)

RSS: Reference Services Section (frontline reference, evaluation and assessment of reference, management of reference)

STARS: Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (ILL/ interlibrary loan, resource-sharing)

This event will include a brief and informative presentation by Ann Brown orienting attendees to RUSA and how to get involved. There will also be refreshments, a raffle and networking opportunities so bring business cards, curiosity, and passion for adult library services, and we’ll see you there!

Saturday June 28

Come to the RUSA President's Program, “Our Values, Ourselves: Examining Our Values and What Others Value about Us” from 4:00 — 5:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, rooms N255/257.

Join us for a thoughtful debate, when we take a close look at whether our own values and self-perceptions interfere with providing services that our patron communities both need and want. Are they the same things that our users think of as important and fundamental? This program exposes and explores the big question about who we are and what we do. We will discover if they are the same things that our users think of as important and fundamental.

The discussion will be lead by a multitude of leaders within the library community and provide a comprehensive overview of how our values and self-perceptions impact how we provide services within our communities.

Sunday June 29

Gale Reaches New Heights with Products — and Performances

As if a slot machine and a money machine weren't enough, Gale, part of Cengage Learning, will be hosting an aerialist in its booth (#1303) over the conference weekend. It is Vegas, after all.

Much like the way its new technology, InterLink, connects periodical content to contextually-related content within its ebooks, the aerialist will link through the air delighting all who stop by. Performances will be held Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

While free money and acrobatics are always a winner, Gale will also have many of its award-winning products on display and ready to demo such as its ebook platform, GVRL, and Analytics On Demand, an innovative new data analysis tool. Stay on top of all Gale's ALA news by following @CengageGale on Twitter.
