JUNE PREVIEW • ORLANDO

LIRT to Host Inspirational Pedagogy and Practice for Public, School, and Academic Librarians Panel

On Sunday, June 26 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in W104 of the Orange County Convention Center, the Library Instruction Roundtable is hosting the panel presentation, “The Wonderful World of Library Instruction: Pedagogy and Practices to Inspire Teaching.” Learn effective methods for inspiring and refreshing your instruction practice in public, school, and academic libraries alike.

Andrea Sáenz, First Deputy Commissioner for the Chicago Public Library system, a system of over 80 neighborhood library branches, and a former policy advisor at the U.S. Department of Education, will bring her knowledge and expertise in education to her discussion of the role of the public library as a community hub central to lifelong learning. As part of this discussion, Sáenz will explore some examples of CPL’s recent educational initiatives, particularly CPL’s innovative programming to deliver STEM and digital skill support and instruction to underserved communities.

Jennifer Underhill, K-12 school librarian at Florida State University Schools (FSU’s Lab School) and active member of the Florida Association for Media in Education, will highlight her experience with action research, a process of inquiry designed for the evaluation and improvement of instruction or programming in a school setting. Appropriate for all library types, Underhill will also provide concrete examples of successful action research projects as well as provide attendees with information on how they might implement action research projects at their own institutions.

The final panelist, Silvia Lin Hanick, First Year Experience Librarian, Assistant Professor, and threshold concept expert from CUNY institution, LaGuardia Community College, will discuss the importance of conceptual teaching as a method for inspiring students to reimagine the conditions of their information landscape. Hanick will share activity and assignment ideas influenced by threshold concepts and the ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy that she uses in in first year, oneshot library instruction sessions.

YALSA Opens Applications for “Future Ready with the Library: Connecting with Communities for College & Career Readiness Services” Project

Rural, small, and tribal libraries can now apply for the Young Adult Library Services Association’s (YALSA) joint project with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), “Future Ready with the Library: Connecting with Communities for College & Career Readiness Services.”

The project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as part of the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarians Program, aims to co-create a customized learning program for staff at rural, small, and tribal libraries to help them build the knowledge and skills needed to prepare middle schoolers with the 21st century skills needed to succeed in college and their future careers. The project also aims to help these libraries build and expand their capacity through community engagement and partnerships.

To be eligible to participate, library staff must be working in libraries with a service population of 15,000 or fewer and/or a library that is 25 miles or more from an urbanized area. To learn and apply, visit www.ala.org/yalsa/future-ready-library.

In the three year timeline of the project, 80 library staff, separated into three cohorts, will be engaged in the project with 20 participants in the first year and 30 in both year two and three. At the conclusion of the project, tangible, turnkey resources such as templates for program planning and partner development will be freely available and ready for use by the library community at-large.

The mission of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is to support library staff in alleviating the challenges teens face, and in putting all teens – especially those with the greatest needs – on the path to successful and fulfilling lives. For more information about YALSA or to access national guidelines and other resources go to www.ala.org/yalsa, or contact the YALSA office by phone, 800-545-2433, ext. 4390; or e-mail: yalsa@ala.org.

Authors Bring Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Poetry, and Adrenaline to RUSA’s 2016 Literary Tastes

The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) will host five award-winning authors – James Hannaham, author of Delicious Foods; Joy Harjo, author of Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings; Naomi Novik, author of Uprooted; Jim Shepard, author of The Book of Aron; and Karin Slaughter, author of Pretty Girls – at the 2016 ALA Annual Conference program “Literary Tastes: Celebrating the Best Reading of the Year,” a conference tradition that features authors from RUSA’s book awards for adults.

Each year expert readers’ advisory librarians from RUSA’s Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) spend hundreds of hours reading and reviewing books written for adults to identify the most outstanding writing published in the areas of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, genre fiction, Jewish literature, and audiobook narration. “Literary Tastes” is an opportunity to hear from noteworthy authors whose books are among their annual selections and also celebrate the art and craft of writing with fellow book lovers. The event is free to all conference attendees, and will take place from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m., Sunday, June 26 at the Rosen Centre, Grand Ballroom A. Authors will be signing books immediately following the presentation.
