American Indian Youth Literature Awards Announced
The American Indian Library Association
(AILA), an affiliate of the American Library Association, has selected three titles to receive the
2018 American Indian Youth Literature Award.
The 2018 AILA Best Picture Book is
Shanyaak'utlaax: Salmon Boy (2017) published
by Sealaska Heritage Institute, illustrated by
Tlingit artist Michaela Goade, and edited by
Tlingit speakers Johnny Marks, Hans Chester,
David Katzeek, Nora Dauenhauer, and Tlingit
linguist Richard Dauenhauer. The 2018 AILA
Best Middle School Book is Tales of the Mighty
Code Talkers, Volume 1 (2016) published by
Native Realities, edited by Arigon Starr (Kickapoo), and featuring the work of Theo Tso (Las
Vegas Paiute), Jonathan Nelson (Diné), Kristina
Bad Hand (Sičháŋǧu Lakota/Cherokee), Roy
Boney Jr. (Cherokee), Lee Francis IV (Laguna
Pueblo), Johnnie Diacon (Mvskoke/Creek),
Weshoyot Alvitre (Tongva), Renee Nejo (Mesa

Grand Band of Mission Indians), and Michael
Sheyahshe (Caddo). The 2018 AILA Best Young
Adult Book is #Not Your Princess: Voices of Native

The American Indian Youth Literature
Awards are presented every two years. The
awards were established to identify and honor
the very best writing and illustrations by and
about American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Books selected to receive the award present
American Indians in the fullness of their
humanity in both present and past contexts.
Honor Books are also selected in each category.
2018 Picture Book Honors:
All Around Us (2017) by Xelena González
(Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation) and illustrated by Adriana M. Garcia. Cinco Puntos Press.

BCALA Announces the 2018
Literary Awards Winners
The Black Caucus of the American Library
Association, Inc. (BCALA) announced the
winners of the 2018 BCALA Literary Awards
during the Midwinter Meeting. The awards
recognize excellence in adult fiction and
nonfiction by African American authors published in 2017, including an award
for Best Poetry and a citation for
Outstanding Contribution to Publishing. The recipients will receive
awards during the 2018 annual
meeting of the American Library
Association in New Orleans, La.
The winner of the 1st Novelist
Award is A Kind of Freedom: A Novel by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton (Counterpoint Press).
The fiction category winner is Difficult
Women by Roxane Gay (Grove/Atlantic, Inc.).
The Honor Books for Fiction are Sing,

Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward (Scribner) and
The Tragedy of Brady Sims: A Novel by Ernest
J. Gaines (Knopf Doubleday).
The winner in the nonfiction category
is Chester B. Himes by Lawrence P. Jackson
(Norton W. W. & Company).
The Honor Book for the nonfiction
category is Defining Moments in Black
History: Reading Between the Lies by

The winner for BCALA's Best
Poetry Award is Incendiary Art: Poems

Winner of 2018
Dartmouth Medal
The winner of the 2018 Dartmouth Medal
for most outstanding reference work, an annual award presented by the expert reference
and collection development librarians of
the Reference and User Services Association
(RUSA), a division of ALA, is The Music of
Central Asia published by Indiana University
Press and edited by Theodore Levin, Saida
Daukeyeva, and Elmira Köchümkulova.
The Dartmouth Medal, established in 1974,
honors the creation of a reference source of
outstanding quality and significance.
There are two Honorable Mentions this
year: The International Encyclopedia of Geography: People, the Earth, Environment, and
Technology by Wiley and the American Association of Geographers, edited by Douglas
Richardson, and The Atlas of Ancient Rome by
Princeton University Press, edited by Andrea
Carandini.
With contributions from 27 authors from
14 countries, The Music of Central Asia is beautifully illustrated with sidebars and musician
