JANUARY 2017 PREVIEW              COGNOTES 15

Celebrate YA novels’ 50th Anniversary with Booklist

Always an important destination and resource for librarians, fans, and publishers of young adult books, Booklist will be even more indispensable in 2017 as it offers a year-long print, online, and in-person celebration of the 50th anniversary of YA novels. (The novel commonly considered the first proper young-adult novel, The Outsiders, was the debut novel of 19-year-old S.E. Hinton, published in 1967 by Viking. It is still widely read).

Celebrations in the magazine itself will include special features and spotlights such as Booklist’s Top 50 YA Novels Ever, monthly guest appearances by top YA authors to share their insights and favorite titles, a decade-by-decade retrospective with Michael Cart in his popular “Cart Blanche” column, love letters to YA from librarians and publishers, a Librarians’ Top 50, a fresh look at past YA reviews, and features from Booklist (“YA Flashbacks”), and best YA audiobook coverage. The special June 2017 double-issue of the magazine will focus on YA books.

Online, content related to YA and the anniversary will be posted regularly on the Booklist Reader, and Booklist will host a free “50 Years of YA” webinar. Other interactive opportunities will be announced throughout the year. The face-to-face celebrations at ALA’s 2017 Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta in January and the Annual Conference in Chicago in June will include presentations and a special panel discussion, cake, fun giveaways, author interviews, contests, and more.

“It’s a pretty exciting time to be at Booklist. The anniversary gives us a chance to talk about all these great books we grew up reading as well as the best of what’s happening right now,” said Booklist Books for Youth Editor Daniel Kraus, himself an award-winning YA author. “It’s also a chance to take a step back and look at the YA movement as a whole – what it has done well, what it still needs to work on, all that.”

Readers are invited to stay updated and join in at #50YearsofYA @BooklistYA.

Booklist Celebrates 50 Years of YA is generously sponsored by HarperCollins Children’s Books, Little Brown, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Penguin Random House, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, and many other YA publishers and supporters to be announced.

Celebrate Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the ALCTS Midwinter Symposium

On Friday, January 20, the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) presents its Midwinter Symposium “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Creating a New Future for Library Collections” at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta. Organized by Charles Wilt, Chair, ALCTS President’s Program Committee, co-hosted by the Georgia State University Library and Director Jeff Steely, and sponsored by OCLC, this symposium addresses the need for action relating to equity, diversity, and inclusion in libraries.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are ideals librarians espouse. Whether in acquisitions, access, management, or preservation, library collections are evolving to support these ideals. Furthering discussions on metadata, open access, and preserving diverse voices in collections are critical as libraries face challenges in a changing society. This symposium explores work underway and what the future brings, and librarians in academic, public, and special libraries will benefit from attending this symposium.

Courtney Young, ALA President 2014-2015 and Head Librarian and Professor of Women’s Studies at Pennsylvania State University’s Greater Allegheny campus, opens the symposium with the keynote address. Speakers Hannah Buckland, Charlotte Roh, Harrison Inefuke, Paolo Gujilde, Emily Drabinski, Ann Marie Willer, and Miriam Centeno will discuss topics including equitable access to collections, scholarly communication and diversity, diversity and visibility in collection development and management, inclusion and advocacy in cataloging and description/knowledge organization, and diversity and inclusion in preservation. Mark Puente, Director of Diversity and Leadership Programs, Association of Research Libraries, will provide closing remarks.

Online registration is available through the ALA 2017 Midwinter Meeting website. Include this event in your conference registration or register for it alone. The cost of this full-day ALCTS symposium is $219 for ALCTS members, $269 for ALA members, $319 for non-members and $99 for ALA student members and retired members. The registration event code is ALC1, and attendance at the ALA Midwinter Meeting is not required to register for this event. Space is limited so register early.

A complete listing of ALCTS events at Midwinter is available, and you can follow ALCTS on social media using #alctsmw17 to get the latest details about ALCTS Midwinter programming.
