USCIS to Lead Discussion Group on Library Services to Immigrants at Midwinter

During this year's American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will discuss current research and practice in second language acquisition in a session entitled, “The Local Library and an Immigrant's Journey to Citizenship: Brain-Based Approaches to Promoting Success.” The presentation will be held Sunday, January 26, 2014, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. in room PCC-307A of the Pennsylvania Convention Center,

The session will provide an overview of current research on how individuals learn languages and process new information, with an emphasis on the skills and knowledge needed during the naturalization process. Participants will also gain practical tips on how librarians can ensure that their library collections and programs match the learning needs of immigrants. The discussion group will be led by Dr. Michael Jones, Division Chief of Citizenship Education and Training in the USCIS Office of Citizenship. Jones has taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and administered ESL programs for the past 34 years.

USCIS offers free training for adult educators, program directors, volunteers, and representatives from immigrant-serving organizations. These seminars are designed to enhance the skills needed to teach U.S. history, civics, and the naturalization process to immigrant students and to administer comprehensive adult citizenship education programs.

This session is sponsored by the Committee on Literacy and the American Library Association's Office for Literacy and Outreach Services.

The program is open to all conference attendees and the media. For more information about the program, visit http://alamwl4.ala.org/.

Who Do You Think You Are? Finding Your Leadership Style

LLAMA Leadership Development Seminar

When you think of a leader, who comes to mind? Mahatma Gandhi? Nelson Mandela? Steve Jobs?

What about you? Do you see yourself as a leader? See yourself as the next Steve Jobs in libraries? Or can't imagine ever being a Director? Everyone has the potential for leadership, but it can be intimidating. There are many different types of leaders and many different leadership styles. There are the autocratic leaders, the servant leaders, the democratic leaders and many more. Leadership isn't a “one size fits all” thing - what worked for Steve Jobs may not work for you or your organization. Come join the LLAMA Leadership Development Committee and explore who you think you are, and the various leadership styles with speakers Dr. Steven Bell of Temple University and Rhea Blanken, Results Technology, Inc.

When: Sunday, January 26, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Location TBD.

The Value of Academic Libraries

Academic libraries and librarians are increasingly called upon to demonstrate their value to the campus community and plan for a rapidly changing future. Join the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, in room 201 B of the Pennsylvania Convention Center for an update on the association's Value of Academic Libraries Initiative. In addition, attendees will learn about the progress of the first Assessment in Action cohort from presenters Kara Malenfant, Terri Fishel, and Sara Lowe. Find out about the first cohort's projects and how to apply for next year; applications due in March 2014. Small group discussions will focus on how the Value of Academic Libraries Committee can support activities on campus and share information if there are activities underway using the Value report on your own campus.
