The preconference topics highlight areas of expertise of ASCLA’s members, and are open to all interested participants. U ALA member, $225; non-member, $295; student and retired members, $165. Forever is a Long Time: Preservation Planning for Digital Collections Friday, June 24, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Assembling a Consulting Toolkit: What You Need to Know to Become a Successful Library Consultant Friday, June 24, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The wildly successful, sell-out workshop is back for a final time! Seasoned consultants Nancy Bolt and Sara Laughlin will present an overview of the consultant’s role and guide you through a self-assessment to uncover your consulting potential. Participants will work together to identify consulting opportunities and how to align them with their experience and skills. Takeaways include marketing tips, pricing your services and business management strategies. Event Code: ASC3. After more than a decade of acquiring and creating digital collections, libraries are now exploring options for assuring long term access to these digital resources. This preconference will introduce participants to digital preservation standards and best practices, digital preservation planning, how risk assessment can be used in planning, and case studies of implementable solutions. Faculty will include three leaders in digital preservation planning: Tom Clareson of LYRASIS, Katherine Skinner of Educopia Institute and Liz Bishoff of The Bishoff Group. Event Code: ASC2. Advance Registration (through May 13, 2011): ASCLA member, $175; ALA member, $220; non-member, $295; student and retired members, $165. Interested participants have the option to register for just an ASCLA preconference, or for both a preconference and the Annual Conference. The breakfast, which will be held from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. Sunday, June 26, features authors from RUSA’s 2011 literary book award selections, including the Notable Books List for outstanding fiction, non-fiction and poetry; The Reading List for the best genre fiction of the year; the Sophie Brody Medal for achievement in Jewish literature; the Dartmouth Medal for an outstanding reference work; and the Outstanding Reference Sources list. Authors read from their work, ruminate on writing and sign books, while attendees enjoy a scrumptious breakfast. Authors participating in this year’s event will be announced throughout the spring at the RUSA website, RUSA blog and literarytastes.com. Registration for the breakfast and conference is now available at the 2011 Annual Conference website. This year’s authors are: Judith Shulevitz, author of the 2011 Sophie Brody Medal-winning title The Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time Nathaniel Philbrick, author of 2011 Notable Book The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of Little Bighorn Guy Gavriel Kay, author of 2011 Reading List Fantasy winner Under Heaven as part of the exciting author lineup for this event. The breakfast is a ticketed event sponsored by the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of RUSA and is one of many CODES events at the Annual Conference. Conference participants can add the breakfast to their registration by locating it on the list of ticketed events in the online registration form (event code RUS2) located at www.ala.org/annual. Those not attending the conference are invited to purchase tickets for the breakfast only by selected “Preconferences and Ticketed Events Only” as their registration type, then selecting the Literary Tastes Breakfast from the event list. Bookmobile Sunday Focuses on Importance of Mobile Outreach Services obile delivery services are evolving to meet the needs of 21st century library patrons. Bookmobile Sunday at the 2011 ALA Annual Conference provides attendees with opportunities to learn, network, and be inspired. Learn about the issues, technologies, and best practices that are shaping today’s bookmobiles from experts in the field; attend an author lunch with Margriet Ruurs; and climb aboard one of the newest vehicles during the Annual Parade of Bookmobiles. The three-part Bookmobile Sunday will be held on June 26, from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. during ALA’s 2011 Annual Conference in New Orleans. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, attendees will hear about the latest trends in bookmobiles in a panel discussion where experts in the field will discuss a range of topics, including bookmobile advocacy, “bookmobiles 101,” tips for new bookmobiles, outreach, and programming. Admission to the panel discussion is free. Following the panel discussion, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to attend an author lunch with Margriet Ruurs, award-winning author of several children’s books, including My Librarian Is a Camel: M The three-part Bookmobile Sunday will be held on June 26, from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Leadership Skills: Leading Your Library to Excellence Friday, June 24, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This workshop will teach you all the things about leadership they never covered in library school. Attendees will identify leadership roles and strengths and then learn to apply them; explore what it takes to be a good supervisor and how to cultivate those qualities; review communication styles, the power of words and the importance of listening; learn how to deal with change and create a motivating environment; and how to build the credibility and respect needed to succeed as a leader. Expert facilitator and trainer Linda Bruno will present. Event Code: ASC1. Advance Registration (through May 13, 2011): ASCLA member, $195; How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World. Tickets to the lunch are $25 and may be purchased with advanced conference registration or in-person at the Conference registration desk, please refer to Ticket ALA OLO1. After lunch, the program will move outside for the Parade of Bookmobiles from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m., where attendees can explore bookmobiles from across the country and speak with bookmobile staff.
