Hosted by Nancy Pearl, director, Seattle Center for the Book and author of Book Lust, the program will feature Bill Thomas, Vice Presi- dent, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief, Doubleday; Lee Boudreaux, Vice President, Ecco (HarperCollins); Stephen Morrison, Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher, Penguin Books; John Sherer, Publisher, Basic Books (Perseus Books Group); and, Michael Pietsch, Executive Vice President and Publisher, Little Brown & Company. Quilt » from page 13 Amy Sedaris, author of the New York Times bestseller I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, with her “Martha Stewart scissors” during the 2010 Annual Conference Closing Session in Washington, D.C. “ L Bookstore, Library Cooperation Topic of Monday Program and Discussion ibraries and Bookstores: Strange Bedfellows?”—jointly sponsored by the American Booksellers Association and the American Library Association—will focus on how librarians and booksellers can, and should, work together to grow readers, build readership, increase literacy and improve communities. Moderated by author and reader’s adviser Nancy Pearl, the program will feature a lively discussion among Becky Anderson (Anderson’s Bookshops, Naperville, IL), Betsy Burton (The King’s English, Salt Lake City, UT), Ruth Liebmann (Random House), Beth Elder (Director, Salt Lake City Public Library, UT) and Sarah Hill (Librarian/Curriculum Director, Paris Cooperative High School, IL). The joint program is scheduled Monday, June 27, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m., Morial Convention Center, Auditorium A. Librarians, booksellers and publishers are invited to take part in this discussion. The 14 quilts they have contributed from 2000-2010 have raised more than $3,500 for the Chris Hoy Scholarship Fund. Membership in the BiblioQuilters is open to any quiltmaker who works in or with libraries: librarian, support staff, trustee, friend or vendor. ALA attendance is not required. Quilt planning used to begin at Midwinter, but now the discussion and planning go on year-round via their Yahoo group. The Intellectual Freedom Round Table Presents Annual Program on Saturday Saturday, June 25, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. New Technologies: The Impact on Government Transparency Interested in government transparency, its effect on libraries, and how changes in technology affect how we share information? Rick Falkvinge, founder of Sweden’s Pirate Party, will speak about how the evolution of information-sharing tools have impacted government transparency. Rick Falkvinge is the founder of the first Pirate Party and a campaigner for next-generation civil liberties and sensible information policy. In particular, he stresses how the copyright industries work in collusion with Big Brother hawks to erode or eliminate the parts of Internet that guarantee our civil liberties. Many Voices, One Nation Moves to Saturday “Many Voices, One Nation”, the popular literature and performance program that has traditionally welcomed attendees to annual conferences on Friday night, will move to Saturday afternoon this year. Many Voices, One Nation: New Orleans will take place on Saturday June 25 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. “Many Voices, One Nation: New Orleans”, brings together writers and artists from different perspectives and presents a rich program of spoken word, music and performance art that celebrates and reminds us of the many unique cultures sharing one world. Many Voices, One Nation is free to conference attendees. Light refreshments will be served and attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to this celebration of diverse literature and art. Featured speakers and performers will be announced soon. Many Voices, One Nation began as an initiative of ALA Past President Carol Brey-Casiano. The 2005 Initiative generated a “nation’s booklist” available at the ALA website, a nationwide celebration of reading entitled Many Voices, One Nation, One Night @ your library® held for the first time on Monday, April 11, 2005 during National Library Week, and the first Many Voices, One Nation literary event held at the ALA 2005 Annual Conference in Chicago. The 2008 event, themed Many Voices, Many Nations, honored the art and culture of America’s diverse Native American populations. Libraries Build Communities Volunteer Day Friday, June 24, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Register to participate in this day-long service effort to help local libraries and the community! All participants will be notified in advance of the various projects and be able to pick the one in which they wish to participate. Your registration fee will be contributed to local library funds.
