A Conversation with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice, was born in Bronx, New York, on June 25, 1954. She earned a B.A. in 1976 from Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude and receiving the university’s highest academic honor. In 1979, she earned a JD. from Yale Law School where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. She thereafter served as Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office from 1979–1984. She then litigated international commercial matters in New York City at Pavia & Harcourt, where she was an associate and then partner from 1984–1992. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, and she served in that role from 1992–1998. She then served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1998–2009. President Barack Obama nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 26, 2009, and she assumed this role August 8, 2009. Justice Sotomayor is the author of My Beloved World, Turning Pages, The Beloved World of Sonia Sotomayor, and the forthcoming Just Ask! This session will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2019, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

The session will be moderated by Jill Santopolo, the Associate Publisher of Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. She edits an array of best-selling and award-winning authors, including Sonia Sotomayor, Chelsea Clinton, Kamala Harris, Temple Grandin, Mayim Bialik, Lisa Graff, Jeffrey Kluger, Terry Border, and Amy Ephron. Santopolo is also the international and best-selling author of The Light We Lost and More Than Words, as well as the Sparkle Spa series, the Follow Your Heart books, and the Alec Flint mysteries. She was a thesis advisor for the New School’s MFA program, on the faculty of the Columbia Publishing Course, and an adjunct professor at McDaniel College, where she helped develop the online certificate program in Writing for Children.

Wmore than 900 exhibiting organizations, the ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition’s exhibit floor is an integral part of your learning, professional development, and networking. The Specialty Pavilions on the show floor give librarians the chance to get an in-depth look at what’s new, including the latest publications, products and technologies.

Expanded with new features, the Diversity in Publishing Pavilion will be home to a wide range of titles, publications, and displays. A Diverse Publication Showcase will round out the area. The showcase will be live online before, during, and after the event and allow exhibitors to enter their books into a searchable database. Titles will then be displayed in the showcase for attendees to review and build a list of “most wanted” books for their own collections, using the MyBookTote mobile app. The pavilion is sponsored by Gale Cengage Learning and the Combined Book Exhibit.

Visit the Sound Garden Pavilion. There’s a “listening lounge,” an area of kiosks offering the first chapter of exhibitor’s audiobooks, categorized by subject. A separate area will offer exposure to a wide range of publishing and book-related podcasts.

At the Live from the 25 Podcast booth, record a short podcast with an author from the exhibits in a semi-soundproof recording booth. In a different area, find indie and emerging audio publishers who will be introducing their newest titles as well.

The Gaming Grove is an oasis of gaming amid the sea of exhibits. Stop by the Gaming Lounge to explore game resources for your library programs. Join the GameRT for open gaming from its library of game resources, sit down for demos from leading game publishers or explore poster and sharing sessions from other librarians who are exploring and implementing successful gaming programs in their library spaces.

Other Specialty Pavilions include Artist Alley, where attendees can meet many of today’s leading artists, illustrators, and creators of comics, games, graphic novels, and books for readers of all ages, and enjoy original artwork.
