She has had stand-up specials on HBO, Comedy Central and LOGO. Her new book tackles beauty, dating, friendship, motherhood, and sex for the single woman from the perspective of one who has seen and done it all – or so she thought. Gary Janetti (Do You Mind if I Cancel? Paula Poundstone has been a stand-up comic for nearly 25 years. She was the first woman to perform standup comedy at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Paula voiced the character “Forgetter Paula” in Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out,” winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Her book The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness landed #1 on Amazon’s best sellers lists in Humor in Hardcover, Audible, and CD within its first two weeks of release. Her long list of successes includes HBO specials, an Emmy Award, two Cable ACE Awards, and an America Comedy Award for Best Female Stand-Up. An outspoken advocate for libraries, she has been the national spokesperson for United for Libraries since 2008.

Wine and cheese will be served, and a book signing will follow. ALCTS Preconference Focuses on Managing Change in Libraries

Join the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) on Friday, June 21 at 8:00 a.m. for the all-day preconference Change Management in Libraries and Technical Services. Whether you are an administrator, middle manager, leader of change, or involved in change at the ground level, this preconference offers something for you! We will explore change management as a foundational concept for individuals, organizations and institutions, as well as the particulars of instituting change within libraries and their technical services departments.

After learning about the foundations of change management, subsequent presentations will discuss examples and case studies specific to libraries and technical services. Some of these examples relate to approaching ILS migrations like a “Get Out The Vote” campaign, shared leadership and change management concepts applicable to reorganizing technical services and reallocating collections budgets.

For more information on this preconference, including the full list of speakers, the schedule or how to register, visit the ALCTS Annual Conference page. For a full listing of all ALCTS events at Annual, visit the ALCTS Programs at Annual 2019 page.

Games & Gaming Round Table President’s Program

Join GameRT on Saturday, June 22 at 2:30 p.m. for the Games and Gaming Round Table President’s Program. In two presentations, speakers will discuss the practical needs of managing game collections in libraries and using free gaming software to develop programming and teach coding skills.

In the first part of the session Sian Brannon, Erin DeWitt Miller, and Diane Robson of the University of North Texas will highlight the results of a nationwide census on games in libraries conducted in summer 2018. They surveyed libraries to find out what games are being collected, how they are cataloged, and what programming is offered, and collected the responses of nearly 600 school, academic, public, and special libraries. Their findings will assist interested libraries to advocate for creating or enhancing game collections and gaming programs with internal and grant funders. The presenters will also give practical insight into managing game collections from a library that has been gaming since 2009.

In the second half of the session speaker Nick Tanzi, will provide a tour of Kodu, free software that enables users to learn how to code their own video games and share them online. Attendees will learn how to get started, how to develop programs for children and teens, and some of the reasons why coding and games will help young library users develop the skills they will need in college and the job market.
