Librarians in Connecticut received a National Security Letter and couldn’t even tell their spouses. Vice-president Cheney refused to disclose the roster of his 2001 energy task force. Documents long available to the public in the National Archives have been reclassified and are no longer available to researchers. The White House “misplaced” thousands and thousands of e-mails. And on and on The President’s Program on Sunday, July 12, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., will feature Tom Blanton, an expert on openness and secrecy in government. Mr. Blanton is director of the National Security Archive at George Washington University. He will recap the growth of secrecy and limits imposed on access to government information in recent years. He will also offer a prescription for restoring open access to government information that has unreasonably been withheld from the people that government should serve. That prescription will offer the Obama administration guidance to right the wrongs of the recent past. offers. P D Grass Roots Programs A new track of programs has been added to the Annual Conference. As one of President Jim Rettig’s initiatives to increase opportunities for members to participate in, contribute to, and benefit from ALA, the “grass roots” program track will host programs selected from proposals members submitted in a competitive process. To assure that these programs address very current issues, the program planning schedule was compressed. Library school students participated in selecting the programs. An Unconference at Annual Conference One-Day Scholarships to Annual On Saturday, July 11, fifty Chicago area college students from underrepresented groups will spend the day taking part in programs, visiting the exhibits, learning about the Spectrum Scholarship program, attending the Opening General Session, and enjoying the Scholarship Bash. Alumni of the Spectrum program will accompany the students in small groups and introduce them to the varied opportunities librarianship Seventy-five attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an Unconference, a full-day conference program where every attendee is an active participant and determines what will be discussed that day. The program will take place on Friday, July 10. Attendees will collaborate online prior to the Unconference to identify topics they are interested in presenting to the group or for which they are willing to facilitate discussion. Everyone will be both teacher and learner, discussing the topics they’re most interested in. Registration for this program is available on a first-come first-served basis.
