Page 4 • Cognotes 2011 Midwinter Meeting Preview Update SAN DIEGO ReadHowYouWant Provides Midwinter Guide in Accessible Formats A s part of ReadHowYouWant’s Ruby sponsorship of the ALA for the third year in a row, RHYW has converted the ALA Midwinter Guide into accessible formats including large print, braille, and DAISY (a digital format with synchronized text and audio). These formats can be downloaded at http://www.combinedbook. com/ala/ala_readhowyouwant.htm. Large print and accessible formats publisher ReadHowYouWant is also announcing its Library Donation Program. The goal of the program is to donate large print books to libraries that need to expand their collections, but do not have budgets for more books in large print. All books donated through this program are shipped directly to the library. More than 150 publishers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand partner with RHYW to release their titles in large print and accessible formats. More than 8,000 titles in a wide variety of genres are currently available for purchase at www.readhowyouwant.com. Stop by booth #1718 during ALA Midwinter to see samples of large print books in 16pt, 16pt bold, 18pt, 20pt, and super large 24pt. To view a list of the sessions at the show, select the “Sessions” channel. You will see a 2011 list of sessions. If you want to see all sessions on Friday, just type ‘fri’ and the list of all sessions on Friday will appear. Clicking on a session will show you more details about the session. Be sure to check out the “add to plan” feature that allows you to keep a personal schedule the show. You can also find local restaurants, hotels and even taxi services through the ALA Mobile. Adam Davis, director of trainings and publications for the Project on Civic Reflection, will present essential tools that will empower attendees to facilitate a broad range of discussions in their library. Participants will leave with concrete facilitation skills that they can immediately put to use. A boxed lunch is included, and registration is limited to 50 participants to maximize the opportunity for hands-on practice. This institute is co-sponsored by the T Learn to Lead a Great Discussion ALA Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee. Registration for “The Art of Discussion Facilitation: Essential Tools for Public Programs and Beyond” is available online as a part of registration for the ALA Midwinter Meeting (event code: PPO1). The cost of this event is $295 for ALA members, with discounted rates available for retired and student members.
