land transactions in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration. These case files cover land entries in all 30 public land states. They were filed as either military bounty land warrants, pre-1908 general land entry files, or as post-1908 land entry files. To access and order copies of the records will differ depending on which of these 3 categories the transaction falls into. Vital Records Vital records are the so-called “delayed birth certificate” created in the 1890s for immigrants and children in Hawaii. Records are available in the following locations: For pre-1896 records, they are available in Hawaii State Archives, from 1896 on, records are available at the Hawaii State Department of Health or available on film through 1903 at the Family History Library of the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). A collection of over 3,140 Chinese genealogies and local histories were preserved on microfilm and available for public use in the GSU main library in Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as in over 700 branch libraries through a network of family history centers. Naturalization Records These records can provide a researcher with information such as a person's birth date and location, occupation, immigration year, marital status and spouse information, witnesses' names and addresses, and more. For Pre-1906 naturalizations: Prior to 1906, any "court of record" (municipal, county, state, or Federal) could grant U.S. citizenship. As a general rule, the National Archives does not have naturalization records created in State or local courts. However, a few indexes and records have been donated to the National Archives from counties, states and local courts and are available as National Archives microfilm publications. For naturalizations after 1906: The courts forwarded copies of naturalizations to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Community and Ethnic Records These records are generally available from ethnic societies or associations based in Chinatown areas. Ethnic Newspapers These newspapers generally cover their respective communities in depth, such as Shijie Ri Bao 世界日報, Xingdao Ri Bao 星 島日報, Qiao Bao 僑報, Zhong Bao 中報, and Zhongguo Shi Bao 中國時報, etc. Military Service and Pension records (from 1775-1902) The National Archives and Records Administration holds Federal military service records from the Revolutionary War to 1912 in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. Military records from World War I to the present are held in the National Military Personnel Records Center (NPRC), in St. Louis, Missouri. The most commonly requested military-related records used by genealogists are: Compiled Military Service Records for Volunteers, Pension Applications and Pension Payment Records, and Bounty Land Records. Cemetery and Funeral Records These types of records include tombstones inscriptions and cremation with exhumed bodies returned back to their native villages in China which contains information such as birth and death dates, ages at death, sometimes exact place of birth and even biographical information are included. Funeral homes may have kept records of cremation and burial and even some personal records of the deceased. Local Records Some of the local types of records may be found at city or county level, federal and state courts, such as criminal and civil judgments, wills, sales, settlements, adoptions, marriages, agreements, and many other court or legal cases. 92
