Medics and Pilots Save Lives Pride in the Sky “A lot of people think Mohawks aren’t afraid of heights. That’s not true. We have as much fear as the next guy. The difference is that we deal with it better,” said Kyle, a Mohawk ironworker. For more than 100 years, Mohawk people have helped build New York City skyscrapers, including Ironworker on a skyscraper in New York the Empire State Building in the 1930s. She also knew it would take a lot of teamwork to get the medicine to the villagers. First, a bush pilot had to locate the villages. He risked his life landing in these remote areas. Then Nestrell and her team took the medicine by canoe through the rainforest. They risked their lives to keep the vaccines cool and prevent an epidemic.
