Medics and Pilots Save Lives Pride in the Sky “A lot of people think Mohawks aren’t afraid of heights. That’s not true. We have as much fear as the next guy. The difference is that we deal with it better,” said Kyle, a Mohawk ironworker. For more than 100 years, Mohawk people have helped build New York City skyscrapers, including Ironworker on a skyscraper in New York the Empire State Building in the 1930s. More recently, Mohawk workers helped build the World Trade Center and then clean up the site after the 9/11 disaster. Many people call them “Fearless Wonders.” Mohawk ironworkers ignore the fact that they are walking on narrow strips of steel several hundred feet above the ground. They look as relaxed as if they were on a stroll through a forest path. Their achievements are a source of honor to the Mohawk people. As Kyle puts it, “There’s pride in ‘walking iron’.” Bush pilot flying into a remote area Jessica Nestrell is a nurse. In 2004 she was working in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She knew that a measles epidemic would be especially challenging there. Diseases spread quickly in steamy rainforests. Nestrell knew that vaccines would prevent the disease. She also knew it would take a lot of teamwork to get the medicine to the villagers. First, a bush pilot had to locate the villages. He risked his life landing in these remote areas. Then Nestrell and her team took the medicine by canoe through the rainforest. They risked their lives to keep the vaccines cool and prevent an epidemic.
