Things are never what they seem to be. Finding the First Vaccines Overview Background The Sherlock Holmes detective stories take place in London, England, during the 1800s. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Holmes, who became the most famous detective character in fiction. The popularity of Sherlock Holmes forced Doyle to remain dedicated to writing about this master of deduction even though he felt the stories were commercial and much less important than his other writings. The first six Holmes stories were published in The Strand magazine, and were so well received, the editors requested more. Not wanting to continue writing detective stories, Doyle set a high price that he was sure would be rejected. But the magazine was more than willing to pay whatever price he set. • Downloadable Teacher’s Guides reinforce Inside skills • Divide each Leveled Library book into manageable reading assignments • Suggests strategies for improving students’ reading performance. Book Summary Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes contains adapted versions of three of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective stories featuring literature’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” “The Redheaded League,” and “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle” are three of the most popular and well-known Holmes mysteries. About the Author The Struggle for Equality Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Scotland in 1859. His mother was a talented storyteller and, as a teenager, Doyle realized that he possessed her talent. However, he chose a medical career instead of a creative one. Doyle began to publish his short stories while still practicing medicine. In 1886, he started writing his first novel, A Study in Scarlet. It introduced the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to readers for the first time. Doyle became a full-time writer in 1891. He felt that he would never receive critical attention unless he was free of Sherlock Holmes. In 1893, Doyle killed Holmes in “The Final Problem,” the last of the twelve stories he had promised the Strand. Fans were outraged. Almost 20,000 people cancelled their subscriptions to The Strand. In 1903, McClure’s magazine in New York offered Doyle $5,000 per story if he would bring Sherlock Holmes back to life. Doyle ultimately agreed, cementing his place in history as the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was finally recognized for one of his serious works in 1902. After a long illustrious career, Doyle died in 1930.
