Builder - January 2009 - (Page 158) IMPACT BUILDER recognizes 30 top innovators of the past 30 years. BY PAT CURRY This year, in celebration of three decades of discussing the issues that matter most to home builders, Builder recognizes 30 innovators who have changed the face of residential construction, whether as builders, architects, policy makers, financiers, manufacturers, economists, or influencers. It’s by no means a definitive list, and it’s not without its controversy. Some of the individuals we chose have stumbled in recent years, but their impact on home building is irrefutable—and worthy of recognition. To celebrate their achievements, the honorees were feted PLAYERS T hirty years ago, Americans were struggling with a tight mortgage market, recession, high unemployment, soaring gas prices, and instability in the Middle East. Housing starts plunged; it was a tough time to be a builder. But there were visionaries who not only survived, but thrived. In the 30 years since Builder began covering the housing industry, it has striven to spotlight these impact players. You know them. They’re the people who take risks, ignore the rules, and redesign the box. They shake things up and make everyone else better for it. at an event at the 2009 International Builders’ Show. And Hanley Wood, LLC and Hearthstone donated more than $200,000 in their honor to The Home Depot Foundation and Global Green USA. We look forward to hearing your comments about the men and women chosen for the list, and invite you to share your experiences with them on BuilderOnline.com, where you can view in-depth profiles. The most lasting recognition any of us can offer, though, is to follow their examples and make an impact of our own. 158 ■ B U I LD E R ja n ua ry 2 0 0 9 W W W.BUILDERONLINE.COM http://www.BuilderOnline.com
