Super Precision & Productivity Magazine - Volume 2, Issue 2 - (Page 25) Hardinge Welcomes Radical Approach PETERBOROUGH, UK - Radical Sportscars is a significant user of Hardinge machine tool technology and has recently invested in a new Talent 10/78 turning center. Radical has a well-resourced machine shop that is dominated by Bridgeport 3 and 4-axis vertical machining centers. These machines are used to manufacture complex engine parts and assemblies and engine, transmission and suspension components for Radical’s SR3, SR4, SR8 and ProSport racing cars. These Bridgeport machining centers have now been joined by a new addition from Hardinge’s portfolio…the Talent 10/78 turning center equipped with C-axis and live tooling. Although the Talent machine was only installed in March 2007, it is already having a significant impact on Radical’s productivity…and is being used to manufacture high-precision complex parts. These parts, often manufactured in small batches, typically 10 – 20 off, are machined from either solid or from casting’s depending on the specific component in question. Specific examples of the type of job machined on the Talent turning center include the manufacture of high precision front and rear wheel hubs on racing cars. In a specific job to manufacture front hubs sets, the Talent turning center is used for all 4 machining operations. These hubs are machined from solid high-grade steel billets. Initially the Talent is used for 2 roughing operations where high and accurate material removal is the overriding concern. After these roughing operations the parts are sent away for heat treatment and the two (final) finishing operations are then performed on the components in their ‘hardened’ state. With these hubs, machine cycle times are typically 50 minutes per part. The hubs are machined to high accuracy of +/- 0.01 to 0.02mm tolerance and a surface finish of 0.5 Ra is required.
