Super Precision & Productivity Magazine - Volume 2, Issue 2 - (Page 34) www.bigkaiser.com One BIG Takeaway from IMTS 2006 Of all the things on display at IMTS this year, there was one valuable bit of information that I learned that can make a critical difference on the shop floor. And it may not even require any additional investment. Like most machine tool buyers, prior to IMTS, I didn’t pay much attention to the brand of spindle on a machine, provided the warranty is good and the machine performance specs meet the need. However, this year at IMTS, I learned that there is an important consideration when tooling up for an application. The engineering design of the BIg-PLUS spindle accommodates tooling that is specially designed to increase the surface area contact between the spindle and tool holder. BIgPLUS tooling is manufactured to the exact specs of the BIg-PLUS spindle so that there is contact between the taper and flange of the holder. I saw this demonstrated on a machine at IMTS and it was as if someone had just turned on a light bulb for me – it simply made intuitive sense. The tool holder sits snug to the spindle, with contact being maintained between both the taper and flange of the tool holder. When the tool holder and spindle are engineered to sit this way, the unit functions much more like a solid form, so of course it will improve rigidity and accuracy. The best news for anyone who runs machining centers is that many of the leading brands of machines come standard with BIg-PLUS spindles and many others offer it as an option, so you may already have one on your shop floor. When the BIg-PLUS dual contact system is tested head-to-head against traditional tooling, the results can be astounding. In one application, feeds and speeds were increased more than 25% with the new tooling. Another showed an improvement in tool life of 700% in a turning application. In yet another, accuracy and repeatability were improved enough to increase finished part productivity by more than 50%. Before IMTS 2006, I thought it would take a new machine to make improvements of this magnitude. But the hands-on assistance and demonstration that I found at the BIg Kaiser booth helped me see the advantages of this type of tooling. This one piece of information made the show well worth my time and expense. Please contact BIG Kaiser at 888-866-5776 and learn how the BIG-PLUS spindle system can improve your performance.
