MICHAEL NOLAN Maui’s whales and dolphins Rich with marine life, Maui’s ocean environment offers up a world that rewards exploration. Experience a humpback whale calf breaching alongside its mother, a trio of bottlenose dolphins keeping pace with the moving boat and more than a hundred leaping spinner dolphins surrounding you. All these were spotted during a single two-hour cruise last spring off Maui’s coast. Spectacular. Maui’s most popular marine animals are its largest––the humpback whales, weighing 40 tons and measuring up to 45 feet in length. Each autumn and winter, thousands of these school bussized whales undertake the 3,500-mile journey to Hawai‘i from the southern coast of Alaska. There the whales spend summers feeding on bountiful schools of small fish and krill. Their swim to Hawai‘i is one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom. The greatest concentrations of Hawai‘i’s humpback whales are found off the coast of Maui, in the relatively shallow waters ringed by the islands of Maui, L ana‘i, Moloka‘i and Kaho‘olawe. ¯ During whale season (December through May), you can often spot whales from shore. Embark on a whale watch cruise and chances are you’ll encounter whales within minutes of leaving the harbor. According to Dr. Quincy Gibson, Research Director at Pacific Whale Foundation, whales choose the warm, shallow ocean waters off Maui because they provide an ideal environment for the humpbacks to give birth and care for their calves. Another factor is the lack of orca whales, a deadly predator of humpback calves. Humpback whales not only give birth while they’re here, they also mate. Maui whale watchers can witness matingrelated behaviors such as tail slapping and head-lunging between males as they compete to gain the most desirable position near a receptive female. Under the surface you can hear the whale songs of male humpbacks prevalent in mating and calving areas. While the humpback whales are seasonal visitors, an impressive array of other marine mammals is found here year-round. Bottlenose dolphins are often observed “bow-riding”––swimming alongside a moving vessel—presumably to enjoy the sensation of the “pressure wave” on their bodies. An encounter with the social Spinner dolphins will cause you to fall in love.
