Maui Vacation Planner 2008 - (Page 8) Maui (800) 525.MAUI Travel Tips Popular surf breaks are numerous along Maui's shores. JOHN ORSBUN Essential Maui The climate Maui contains a number of micro-climates. It is generally drier on the leeward side, wetter windward. It’s warmer along the coast than upcountry where temperatures are typically 8-10 degrees cooler. If you’re headed to the summit of Haleakal a, expect temperatures in the 40s ¯ or lower. Generally speaking, there are two seasons. Winter (November through April), when temperatures typically range in the low-70s to mid-80s, and summer when the high can run into the low-90s. The trade winds keep you comfortable year-round. Recent airport security measures designed to enhance your safety have also changed the check-in experience. We hope these tips will help you get efficiently through the airport as you head for your plane. » Book your air reservations in advance, especially during peak travel periods. » A government issued identification must be presented for the airline ticket agents to issue you a ticket to board a plane. » Most airlines require you to check-in two hours prior to your departure time. Allowing two hours will give you enough time for check-in and the security screening process, plus it will eliminate any anxiety if there are long lines. » Keep your check-in bags fit and trim, and under the airlines’ maximum weight allowance of 50 pounds. » Do not lock your check-in baggage. Airlines allow only one carry-on bag plus one personal item (such as a laptop, purse, briefcase or camera case). » Label your luggage, including your laptop computer, with identification tags. » To help speed up at the security checkpoint process avoid clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories that contain metal, which could set off the alarm. Put all metal items in your carry-on bag, including coins, keys, mobile phones, pagers and PDAs or place them in the containers provided at the security checkpoint. » For additional tips, visit the Transportation Security Administration website at www.tsa.gov/public. Smoke-free paradise Hawai‘i values healthy lifestyles and fresh air. The Hawai‘i Smoke-Free Law prohibits smoking in enclosed public areas, workplaces and within 20 feet of doorways, windows and ventilation intakes. For more information, or to read the entire law, visit www.HawaiiSmokeFree.com. Hawai‘i’s environment Playing it safe The ocean is Maui’s playground, but there are precautions to observe. Offshore winds and currents can be powerful and change suddenly. That means don’t stray too far from shore or head out to kayak, windsurf or sail if warning signs are posted or if conditions warrant caution. If you’re unsure about conditions, ask a lifeguard. For information about beach safety conditions, visit hawaiioceansafety.org. If you’re hiking into a wilderness, be sure to sign out with park rangers and observe all warning signs. The Maui sun is strong. Since you’ll be outdoors most of the time, apply sunscreen often, wear sunglasses and a hat. Few places are as safe as Maui, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon all care as you travel about. Lock your car doors and don’t leave any personal belongings in your unattended vehicle. Hawai‘i’s environment is fragile. Part of the natural beauty of Hawai‘i comes from its geographic isolation from other ecosystems. Bringing plants, produce or animals here might introduce pests that could ruin this paradise forever. That’s why the State Department of Agriculture will inspect, and likely confiscate, such materials when you arrive. Similarly, upon departure, your luggage must pass agricultural inspection at the airport to ensure that no plant insects or diseases are hitching a ride back with you. Be sure that any fruits or plants you take home from Maui are certified for export. For more information, call the State Department of Agriculture at (808) 873.3555. Getting here There are many non-stop flights to Maui from the continental U.S. and Canada. Others connect through Honolulu. There are interisland flights to and from Maui, Moloka‘i and L ana‘i, as well as ¯ frequent daily flights between all islands. There’s also daily ferry service between O‘ahu, Maui, L ana‘i and Moloka‘i. ¯ 8 http://www.HawaiiSmokeFree.com http://hawaiioceansafety.org http://www.tsa.gov/public
