from the editor extraordinary people Photo by JEFF MOSIER PHOTOGRAPHY When people ask me why I love my job so much, my response is always, "It's the people." It's amazing to work in a role where you are inspired every day by the creations and ideas of others, and your entire job is to talk to them about the interesting things they are working on and to plan events to bring these creatives together to continue the dialogue. Throughout our other nine yearly issues, we celebrate the people behind the projects, the brands, and the products we feature-it's always top of mind. But in this annual People issue, we devote the entire 156 pages to those helping to make the industry the fascinating place that it is today. There are photo recaps of our annual Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) and HD Awards events and the people who made them so successful; a trends story that profiles four startup design firms that took the recession as an incentive to do something different, (and maybe even better); a roundup of three projects raising the bar in eastern Canada from the point of view of the talented designers behind them; an interview with Jason Pomeranc, the founder of Thompson Hotels, who now is reinventing himself and a few of his signature properties under new brand SIXTY Hotels; a sneak peek of the speakers who will make our HD Americas conference, September 16th-17th at the Miami Beach Convention Center, a not-to-miss event; and our Back Space chat with developer Will Obeid, who is turning his Jade hotel in New York's Greenwich Village into a full-fledged brand. The bulk of the magazine, meanwhile, is dedicated to 17 individuals (13 groups, our HD baker's dozen, if you will) who are masters of story: from their paths to success to the way they make a project come to life. We have cast a wide net of talent including quite a few standouts in various hotel brands, such as Destination, Viceroy, Kimpton, and Rosewood; a young development threesome who hit a homerun with their first hotel; a pair of restaurant and nightlife guys who are taking their companies to the next level; and two designers who have redefined the meaning of diversification throughout their prolific careers. (One of them, Paola Navone, graces our cover, thanks to her eye-catching portrait.) We hope you enjoy our stories about them. As we look forward to the rest of the year, we are excited to make a few announcements. George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg of Yabu Pushelberg will act as the guest editors for our November issue. They have undoubtedly made an indelible mark on the industry, and we can't wait to see what they do with the magazine. And we have selected this year's Platinum Circle honorees: architect M. Arthur Gensler Jr.; designer Lauren Rottet; hotelier Adrian Zecha; and restaurateur Danny Meyer. They-along with Rockwell Group for 30 years of innovation-will be feted for their career achievements on November 11th at the Conrad New York (tickets on sale this month at During the evening, NEWH will present a new scholarship in honor of Cliff Tuttle of ForrestPerkins, who recently passed away (you can read more about his career on page 54). We at HD are saddened by his passing, and express our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues for the loss of an industry leader, a fine designer, and a good friend to the HD team. After all, it's the people who make this industry so incredible, and it's always hard to lose one of the good ones.
