Hospitality Design - October 2014 - (Page 26)

from the editor food for thought Photo by JEFF MOSIER PHOTOGRAPHY Welcome to our annual Restaurant issue. Of course, we cover restaurants throughout the year, but this issue gives us a chance to highlight some of the interesting players and trends making an impact in this space. Take our reports on the resurgence of food halls as dining destinations or the onslaught of good-looking wine bars and wineries, while a look at our feature well-which showcases two fast-casual concepts in Sydney and Beijing and an airport restaurant, among other stunning restaurants-proves that good design is definitely not saved for fine dining. The highlight of the issue for me: I was lucky to sit down with chef Daniel Boulud and designer Jeffrey Beers for a very engaging, honest conversation about their 15 years of collaboration. It's a relationship we should all envy. We will also be posting more restaurant projects on our brand new website throughout the month of October. It's been almost a decade since got an overhaul, and we are really excited to show it off. It's still HD, just cleaner, a little easier to use (with more and clearer categories), and yes, we have made room for more-and larger-photos for both projects and products. We hope you will make it a daily stop in your internet browsing routine. That's not the only new initiative for the HD Group. Partnering with our sister magazines-Contract, KB+B, design:retail- we are launching Design Americas, a onestop tradeshow and conference focusing on the Latin America and Caribbean region that caters to all four design disciplines: hospitality, commercial, residential, and retail. The exciting collaboration, which will take place in Miami Beach September 16-17th, will also be the new home for our annual HD Americas show. For more information, read the note from our group show director, Liz Sommerville, on page 32. But the next event on our calendar is our Platinum Circle Awards Gala on November 11th at the Conrad New York. It should be a night to remember as we induct four industry visionaries-architect Art Gensler, restaurateur Danny Meyer, designer Lauren Rottet, and hotelier Adrian Zecha-into our prestigious society for career achievement, and honor Rockwell Group for 30 years of innovation. Tickets are now on sale at We hope you can join us, but in the meantime, find interviews with each of the inductees about their illustrious careers (and projects) starting on page 109.
