from the show director model relationship Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) May 4-6, 2016 Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas Contact us: 1145 Sanctuary Parkway, Suite 355 Alpharetta, Georgia 30009 770.291.5400 I've been thinking about Australian surfer Mick Fanning's recent run-in with a shark during the J-Bay Open tournament in July in South Africa over the past few weeks. It's a miracle he came out unscathed-it seemed the shark wasn't giving up, even as Fanning fought back, swam away, and was picked up by jet skis. It may appear to be an unlikely metaphor, but it strikes me how we can relate his situation to how we can feel in our work lives, whether we're undercut in price by our shark competitors or outbid on that new design project. But what really stood out about the situation was that, as Fanning flailed in the ocean, his biggest competitor and protégé, Julian Wilson, swam toward Fanning to help, potentially risking his own life. Sometimes we feel helpless in life but in the face of that adversity, it's the relationships we build with others that can matter the most. Competition aside, in that moment, it was Fanning and Wilson's mutual respect and connection that was far more important than anything else-including winning. Relationships are the crux of what make us successful, personally and professionally. They provide us with the ability to present our best selves and keep that safety net clearly in place. Hospitality proves this. Brand loyalty, customer service, and managing expectations are just a few of the keywords that jump out to me when it comes to our industry, and it's so important that we spend time with our customers and build on our networks at every possible opportunity. Those relationships are never more evident than when we all come together each year during HD Expo. It's one of my favorite parts-watching everyone interact, glean new ideas, and forge new connections. I'm already making some exciting plans for our very special 25th HD Expo, next May 4-6th, 2016 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, so come join us. We promise we won't bite. Happy anniversary, HD-I will see you there.
