It's only fitting that I returned to snow-covered New York from the Americas
Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in sunny Los Angeles to close this issue, our
annual look at where development is happening.
There were mixed reviews at ALIS, but the overwhelming consensus-amidst
talks about the recent hotel mergers (Starwood/Marriott, Accor/FHRI, and
Destination/Commune), a switch from financing from REITs to private equity, the
not-so-positive impact of Wall Street on hotel stock prices, Hilton launching midmarket brand Tru, and the effect of sharing economy disruptors like Airbnb-is
realistic optimism for the industry to continue with strong fundamentals and growth
for 2016. Secondary and tertiary markets are
definitely places ripe for development, which is
why the issue you have in your hands is so timely.
In our Hidden Treasures section, we look
at seven of these destinations-from Savannah,
Georgia and Palm Springs, California to Playa
del Carmen, Mexico and Costa Rica-all of
which are seeing an influx of development and,
arguably more important to us, good design. Our
features also highlight boutique standouts in
under the radar markets Durham, North Carolina
and Richmond, Virginia, and look at a cool new
teahouse off the beaten path in Beijing and an
eclectic hotel in San Francisco's Japantown-two
hidden treasures in major markets enjoying
impressive growth. Also in this issue, we launch a new section called Brand Identity,
where we will delve into the ethos of a brand and the people and design behind it.
First up is Hotel RL, a new 3-Star offering from Red Lion Hotel Corporation, already
open in Baltimore and Washington, DC, with more planned in the likes of Spokane,
Washington, St. Louis, and Salt Lake City.
This section will come to life at HD Expo, May 4-6th at the Mandalay Bay in Las
Vegas, during a session with executives from Virgin Hotels, Moxy Hotels, and Cachet
Hotel Group. Registration is now open, so check out our more than 25 conference
sessions at hdexpo.com. And for one other HD-related plug, we are now accepting
entries-both projects and products-for our annual HD Awards program. We had
a record-breaking number of entries last year, and from the plethora of amazing
designs we have seen come across our desks over the past year, we're optimistic for
another banner showing. The submission deadline is March 1st.
