And now we are on to our next event, the 12th annual HD Awards. It was another amazing year in terms of entries-540 for our 20 project categories and more than 300 in our 11 product offerings. (Meet the judges of this year's competition on page 36.) You received this issue a tad later than last year, because for the first time, we announced the winners at our event on June 8th in New York. Katie Kervin, our managing editor, and Alissa Ponchione, our associate/products editor, manage the entire process, so I asked them for their takeaways. In terms of projects, Kervin says, "I'm always impressed by the variety-and sheer number-of project entries we receive each year. Many of this year's entries holistically conveyed a sense of story. Take the Loews Minneapolis Hotel (winner in both midscale hotel and midscale public spaces categories), which weaves through a narrative of the city's flour mills and musical icons; while Chicago's Swift & Sons (winner in the upscale restaurant category) channels a fictional early 20th-century cattle company's office; and the Chicago Athletic Association (which won in the lifestyle public spaces category) incorporates aspects of sporting throughout. The judges certainly (and as always) had a lot to consider." As for the products competition, Ponchione says: "Watching the product awards grow from an idea into a reality over the last two years has been inspiring and eyeopening. I feel like a proud parent (or at the very least, a very impressed aunt). This year we saw products that pushed boundaries, took risks, and innovated old ideas; we are watching trends being made. Not to mention, the caliber of talent from our entrants and the insightfulness of the year's judges is what continues to make this industry so revolutionary." This issue also features our 2016 Wave of the Future honorees, our annual award given to those who are 40-ish and younger "making waves" in the industry. These seven impressed us with their passion and wide-ranging achievements, and I look forward to chatting with them on stage at our NextGen Forum June 16th in Washington, DC. The diverse talent in our industry never ceases to amaze, and the issue that you have in your hands showcases some of the best in class. Enjoy!
