Fall in New York is one of my favorite times of the year-partly because it seems
like a new restaurant opens every week. So much to see and try, so little time. Which is
why it's also the perfect time for our annual restaurant issue.
We have gathered an impressive mix of venues spanning the globe and the people
behind them. We look at a new crop of good-looking cafés that are reinventing coffee
culture, and we sit down with Scott Gerber of the Gerber Group to discuss his family's
continued evolution of the hotel bar. And we catch up with a chef and mixologist duo
who together are pushing the envelope on what
sustainable means to food and drink. But that's just
the beginning: our comprehensive dining in style
roundup showcases 30 standout venues (including
a few from two designing duos) that each speak to
the menu and location it inhabits. Some are bold,
some are elegant, and others are simple in form,
but they all leave a lasting impression that lingers
past the taste buds.
Art, it turns out, was a unifying element for
a few of these places, adding another layer to
the design story. That holds true for six hotels
we profile-from Los Angeles to Italy-that also
double as art galleries.
Two of them fall under the Sage Hospitality
umbrella, which serendipitously coincides with
our coverage of the company's CEO, Walter Isenberg, one of our esteemed Platinum
Circle honorees this year. He has helped Sage grow an impressive list of art-filled
hotels and restaurants, all crafted by renowned designers. He joins Anda Andrei, who
has recently stepped out on her own after being the righthand to Ian Schrager for 30
years, and, among other things, is working with iStar to reinvent Asbury Park, New
Jersey with her perfectly curated spaces; Bill Bensley, who has created some of the
most distinct and luxurious resorts in Asia, all infused with his eclectic personality;
and Joan Cardy, the purchaser extraordinaire, who has helped realize the incredible
vision of the designers and owners of some amazing lifestyle and luxury properties
across the U.S. and beyond.
