Creating a place of respite, restoring the historic main entrance
of Brigham and Women's Hospital and improving pedestrian and
vehicular circulation were among the key objectives achieved with
the construction of the Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial
Park and patient parking garage. Designers reframed the entry to
the hospital by transforming an unattractive on-grade asphalt parking lot into an elegant and accessible open space. The completed
landscape reestablishes the hospital's
historic building
and grounds as the
definitive landmark
of Brigham Circle.
The ambitious project was comprised
of a below-grade
parking structure
for 400 cars and 95
bicycles.

Annie's Healing Garden was created from the desire to transform an
existing 1,300 sf ballasted roof into an area of respite for patients and
their caretakers. The opportunity to momentarily escape the indoor
hospital environment and be in an outdoor garden setting can be an
important part of healing therapy. The garden is ADA accessible and
utilizes colorful planters to provide structure. LED lights strung in
trees add a glowing warmth. The plant pallet offers color throughout
the seasons. Recycled pavers provide opportunity to incorporate
memorial engravings. The space is completed by colorful sculptures,
providing focal points within the garden.
