Success starts with you

Resolve to make 2016 your best professional year yet by taking an active
role in achieving success

By now most of us have set, and perhaps already
broken, our New Year's resolutions. I believe in
resolutions because I want to have a successful
year; by jotting down goals, I hope to make my
commitment to success more real.
The fact is, 2016 will be challenging for some
and wildly positive for others. So the real question is: What do we have to do to have a great
year?
For me, it starts with looking in the mirror.
Because while I can't control the external factors
surrounding me, I can control my attitude and my
effort. I particularly like this quote by Zig Ziglar:
"Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine
your altitude." I use it on my kids all the time. If
you think external factors or other people are
responsible for what happens in your life, then
you're handing that power away. The first step to
having the best year of your life is to take absolute responsibility for everything-what you have,
what challenges you're facing, and how they're
going to be addressed. You aren't always to
blame for what happens, but you are responsible
for your reaction.
It's a poor excuse to say that you are where
you are because of the economic climate or
because of this person or that one. Don't give

these outside factors so much power over you.
The results you're currently getting-good or
bad-can be altered by your thoughts and the
decisions and actions they lead to.
It's certainly not always easy to avoid naysayers and bad luck; even if everything seems
to go right, success can elude us. But we know
this-and that's why we'll be at the Healthcare Design Expo & Conference in Houston in
November.
We'll be there to learn new ideas and share
ones that have proven successful. We'll see
products that will help advance our businesses
and, more importantly, will make patients' lives
better. The best part is that we'll be surrounding ourselves with people who are all clearly on
the path to success, as well.
Remember: How great 2016 will be is really
all up to you. And that's pretty awesome. HCD
