Life in motion

Designers of Hartford Hospital's
new Bone & Joint Institute use
the provider's clinical vision for its
practice to inspire the sculptural
form of the facility itself

As an answer to providing the square footage necessary to grow Hartford HealthCare's
number of orthopedic ICUs, ORs, and private
patient rooms, the new five-story Hartford Hospital Bone & Joint Institute was inspired by the
program-inside and out.

Top: The building shape is inspired by the orthopedic institute's motto
"life in motion," using swooping curves and rounded corners to express
movement, including in the pedestrian bridge that ties the inpatient hospital to the adjacent ambulatory center. Middle: Patients are afforded
views to the nearby park thanks to the building's large windows and
sweeping lines. The park also serves as an extension of the rehabilitation program with features including a running track. Above: The lobby

it's the first new patient building on the campus in decades and helps make better use of
available space by colocating critical program
components. To that end, the project includes
a new 150,000-square-foot inpatient hospital that's linked by pedestrian bridge to an
86,000-square-foot ambulatory center.
The bridge itself marks the main entry with an
open and light-filled two-story lobby, featuring a
bold cherry wood balcony influenced by Hartford Hospital's existing branding.
Designed by Perkins+Will (New York) as
design architect and HDR (Princeton, N.J.) as
executive architect, the hospital will house 10
ORs, up to 60 patient rooms, an orthopedic
urgent care center, diagnostics and imaging, a
wellness/rehabilitation center, and administrative
offices. The ambulatory center will provide five
ambulatory surgery suites and offices dedicated to
orthopedics, neurosciences, and rheumatology.
However, it was the phrase "life in motion,"
used in the orthopedic practice, that inspired the
building's fluid design that provides a constant
sense of movement, particularly on its exterior.
Using curved white metal panes with large ribbon windows that wrap the building, the design
succeeds in creating a dynamic aesthetic but
also takes advantage of its site configuration
and allows open views to an adjacent botanical
park and lots of natural light.
The project is currently under construction
and is expected to be completed in October
