Taylor Design is a firm that

whether places, spaces,
or interactions - that drive
value and create meaningful
connections for end-users.
How has your company
evolved over the years?
Historically our firm was
focused on designing
buildings and interiors
for the healthcare sector;
our values are to support
social improvement, so we
have also committed to
the education and science
and technology markets
as areas that we feel are
rooted in human service. As
client needs have evolved
and grown more complex,
we have also refined
how we think of design,
and how we practice;
we know that our clients
want to work with a firm
that can collaborate with
them on their business
purpose, and we have
infused our work with a
focus on user needs and
understanding our clients
at a deeper level. Our
practice areas now span
architecture, interiors, and
strategy services, which
enables us to ask different
questions and make fewer
assumptions in our work.
What is technology's
role in the design of
healthcare spaces?
It's clear that the
relationship of people to
healthcare and wellness
is changing because
of technology (think
wearable sensors), and
the exponential pace of
technological capabilities
will have a significant
effect on our market - and
our work. As technology
evolves and makes
physical presence less
importance in wellness
services and healthcare
delivery, it may be that
the need for physical
healthcare spaces could
become less central
in terms of healthcare
delivery. For Taylor Design,
this could mean that the
solutions we offer clients
might be more about
how they interact with
patients or communities perhaps we would design
a "system" and new ways
of doing things rather than
buildings and spaces.
How will the design
of healthcare spaces
change to meet the
demands of today's
consumers?
We are living in an
increasingly consumercentric world; patients feel
more empowered now
to rate their healthcare

experiences on Yelp and
other apps, and healthcare
providers are more attuned
to this trend. Also, with
funding for healthcare
progressively tied to patient
satisfaction and outcomes,
as well as the overlapping
expectations of economic
sectors (such as retail and
hospitality), we feel that we
need to think as if we are
designing retail experiences
as well as meeting the
specific needs of our
healthcare clients. Also, we
are seeing an emphasis on
addressing the health of
communities, and healthcare
facilities are becoming
educational, medical, and
fitness hubs as much as
they are traditionally treating
patients.
