PROJECT WATCH
The Specialty Care Center Princeton at Plainsboro brings
the renowned pediatric expertise of The Children's Hospital
of Philadelphia within reach of the residents of Central New
Jersey, and provides a wide range of services and testing
to children throughout the region. Developed as part of a
larger masterplan established by Plainsboro Township, the
Specialty Care Center builds upon synergies with the adjacent
University Medical Center of Princeton and Merwick Care
& Rehabilitation Center. The design of the new 26,000
SF building represents the initial phase of a three phase
expansion plan that will ultimately result in a 100,000 SF
facility spread across two floors, and as such has been
planned for seamless horizontal and vertical expansion.
Over 40 Exam rooms serving 20 specialties were similarly
designed to allow for flexibility as a specialty experiences
higher demand. Focusing on point-of-use, each cluster of 8
exam rooms feature an adjacent staff work room, allowing
staff to stay within close proximity to patients when touching
down. The modularity of the layout promotes longevity as
exam rooms have the ability to adapt to multiple specialties,
and prototypical rooms provide a flexibility of use that allows
CHOP to react to demand in an unrestricted way.
The design team made efforts to create a facility that
cultivates a healthy, comfortable, and pleasant environment,
but is also respectful of the impact that facility expenditures
have on the bottom line of delivering patient care. The
concave curvature of the front façade is an inverted extension
of the curved façade of the adjacent University Medical
Center of Princeton. The brick and metal panel featured
on the building exterior match those materials used on
the adjacent buildings, while the fenestration and massing
express the program of the private and public interior
spaces. The contrast of the rough split-faced concrete units
and smooth brick, the colorful and playful floor pattern,

the designed randomness of the mosaic glazing, were all
elements developed to articulate function, relate to context,
express a sense of fun, and aid in wayfinding.
The expanse of glazing on the south façade takes
advantage of daylighting and winter solar heat gain, while
increased thermal and lighting controllability allow systems to
serve the needs of individual zones. The building is designed
to achieve LEED Silver certification.
