THE HEALTHCARE DESIGN Expo & Conference is a big event. It annually draws thousands of attendees and exhibitors, packing in

everything from local facility tours to product solutions presentations to certification exams to association meetings throughout the
four-day event-not to mention some pretty fun parties. One of the biggest draws, though, is education.
The 2017 show, being held Nov. 11-14 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., will
include 139 conference sessions across 12 tracks and three session types: educational (traditional setting, one hour),
deep dive (in-depth look at a singular topic, two hours and 15 minutes), and interactive (a small roundtable-style
discussion). Attendees can earn 23 continuing education hours for AIA and IDCEC as well as 20 EDAC hours.
One way that the HCD conference team works to break the massive program into digestible pieces is
by creating tracks that serve as strategic starting points, depending on what an attendee's professional
concentration may be or area where one is seeking more knowledge. For example, a facility
manager may want to first dig into what's available under the Facilities Management, FGI, or
Improving the Patient and Family Experience tracks, while a seasoned architect might look for
ideas in the Employing New Technologies and Transformation and Innovation tracks.
There's truly a path for everyone. But to get you started, here are a few of the standout sessions
under each track that will give you an idea of what's available to explore and help identify which route

Famed researcher Roger Ulrich will be joined by staff from Legacy Health to
present the findings of new studies on the effects of a garden on three populations: anxious family members of intensive care patients, critical care nurses
working in high-stress units, and postpartum mothers and their partners.

The research team from The Center for Health Design will dig into the
topic of single-bed patient rooms, presenting findings from a systematic
literature review of multiple outcomes associated with these environments-showing what we know and what we might be missing about the
mandated spaces.

To address the lack of available research on the design of behavioral
health facilities, this speaker panel from Shepley Bulfinch, Architecture+,
and Cornell University will share results of efforts to identify design features
believed to positively affect patients, staff, and families and touch on features including private rooms, access to nature, and nurses' station design,
with guidelines provided.

Experts from Cleveland Clinic will offer insight on how the organization's guiding
principle of "Patients First" was applied to its built environments to create an
empathy-driven exam room. They'll detail the specific steps taken to create a
functional, flexible space and the process behind adopting that model across the
system's 4,000 exam rooms.

Attendees will get an inside look at the master planning process for Palos Health,
being done in conjunction with Loyola University Medical Center, that has a goal of
supporting the future of outpatient medicine within the greater community, including
care that's appropriate, responsive, and provides a broad spectrum of services.
