Healthcare Design regularly invites healthcare
design professionals to share what topics are
currently on their minds through our "Take 5"
blog. This year, we heard from firm principals
and executives, nurses, facility planners, and
more on a range of issues, from microhospitals
to healthy building materials to the impact of
technology and modularity on building design.
As we head into a new year, here are some of
the most intriguing trends that were tackled by
our contributors in 2017.

Long-term facility viability and
modularity Avoiding obsolescence is
one of the most important goals for new
healthcare buildings. With the rising
costs of healthcare and the impact on our
society and economy, we can do our part
to create a better healthcare system by designing
buildings that remain viable well into the future.
New manufacturing technologies are enabling us to
focus on modularity, which provides efficiencies and
substantial cost savings for new construction and
future renovations. And, if planned correctly, these
modular systems can help staff work more efficiently
across platforms in highly flexible spaces.-Scott

Addressing the full spectrum of
safety Healthcare organizations aspire to
create an error-free culture of safety as part of a relentless
pursuit of continuous quality improvement. Great progress
has been made, but healthcare organizations still face
challenges, including nosocomial infections, medication
administration mistakes, work-related staff injuries, patient
falls, and incorrect diagnoses. Multiple solutions have been
developed-creating standard processes, mitigating
distractions, establishing performance expectations, and
requiring additional training-but one often overlooked
answer is design. For example, the layout of a patient room
can help reduce fall rates; adjacencies can minimize travel
time and supply utilization; and decentralized workstations
can increase patient engagement. As designers and nurse
leaders, we need to be more effective in communicating
