2017 CHANGEMAKER:
DESIGN IS A RESPONSIBILITY

MARDELLE MCCUSKEY SHEPLEY, professor at Cornell University's department of design and environmental analysis and associate director of the
Cornell Institute for Health Futures, was presented with The Center for
Health Design's annual Changemaker Award at the HCD Expo. During
a keynote presentation, she sat down with D. Kirk Hamilton, co-recipient
of last year's Changemaker Award. Shepley discussed with him how
her students have inspired her and how they continue to be one of the
driving forces in her career. "I've seen the next generation step up to the
plate-their ability to take huge personal risks, and professional ones, to
make a positive impact on the world despite its many challenges," she
said. Spending her career as an architect and researcher with a focus
on vulnerable populations, Shepley said she plans to continue that work,
including mentoring students. "Like most of us, I hope to have a legacy,"
she said. "In my case, I'd like that legacy to be that I've shared in the creation of a culture that recognizes that design is a responsibility. We must

THE CENTER FOR Health Design announced the recipients of its inau-

gural Touchstone Awards at the HCD Expo, recognizing projects for
the application and advancement of the evidence-based design (EBD)
process. Submissions were judged on their success in demonstrating
interdisciplinary team and stakeholder education, engagement, and
development; the extent to which research was found, evaluated,
and applied; and how the EBD knowledge gained was disseminated,
captured, and has the potential for application to future projects.

3 LESSONS FROM SWEDISH
ISSAQUAH CAMPUS
SWEDISH MEDICAL CENTER'S Issaquah, Wash., campus
opened in 2011. The 18-acre site features a 324,000-squarefoot hospital and an attached 224,000-square-foot medical office building. During the HCD Expo session "The
Swedish Issaquah Campus: Five Years Later," project team
members Lori Epler Hout, healthcare market leader at
CollinsWoerman; Jeremy McClanathan, senior energy engineer at Mazzetti + GBA; and Beata Canby, senior project
manager, stewardship and strategic development at Swedish Medical Center, gave an overview of the project's goals,
which included a commitment to sustainability, supporting
the community, and providing efficiency and flexibility, before diving into some specific lessons learned.
1. Energy efficiency. Swedish Issaquah utilizes variable air volume and heat recovery systems, with an energy
use intensity (EUI) goal of 150 EUI. The facility achieved
that within the first year and, in 2017, hit 104 EUI, with
the two systems accounting for 90 percent of total energy
savings. However, while Swedish hired two in-house controls engineers to take ownership of the building system,
McClanathan said it took a while to bring everyone up to
speed. The staff also had to learn that a tweak to one element, such as the heating or cooling levels, would set off a
chain reaction on other mechanical systems. "We had to
learn to treat the system as a whole," he said.
2. Community engagement. The organization was intentional about putting diverse services into a mall-like
common area that connects the two buildings, to create
a destination as well as provide amenities for staff, patients, and families. While it originally housed a Starbucks,
Lululemon athletics clothing store, gift store, lingerie retailer (which provided prosthesis fittings), pharmacy, and
baby store, only a few remain, including the gift store and
Starbucks. Other public spaces are being well used, though,
including a meeting room on the second floor that hosts
community meetings and knitting groups.
3. Built-in flexibility. Mindful of planning for future
growth, the facility features universal patient rooms and
identical floor layouts-features that have allowed the
hospital to expand easily during its first few years. For
example, during a building project two years ago, the universal design was utilizied to temporarily relocate an entire ICU floor to another area during construction. The
nurses didn't have to deliver care in an unfamiliar environment, and, more importantly, "We didn't lose one ICU day,"
Canby said.-AD
