Exactly! Remove the barriers. Block out what you've been
told can't be done. How often is an innovative design
solution compromised due to codes and regulations,
budget constraints, an unrealistic deadline, or reluctance
to take a risk? Imagine if none of that were in play ...
Consider where you think healthcare is heading and the
built environment that will be required to support it, and
take us there now!

Let's do it!
Healthcare Design is excited to announce an awards
program unlike any other we've done before. Breaking
Through is a conceptual design competition. We're looking
for imaginative, innovative, and inspiring ideas. Breaking
Through isn't about what you've already accomplished; it's
about what you could imagine for healthcare if the rules
didn't apply. What's your vision? Plan it, draw it, create it,
and show us.

The jury is in
The first round of submissions must include professional-quality renderings/drawings,
building plans, a project narrative, and detailed responses to program questions.
Next, a jury of senior-level design professionals, consultants, and healthcare providers will
assess the submissions and narrow those down to a group of finalists. Results will be issued
on Aug. 10, 2018.
Finalists will then have 12 weeks to prepare for a 10-minute presentation on stage at
the 2018 Healthcare Design Expo and Conference (Nov. 10-13, 2018, Phoenix). Live
presentations must include high-quality visuals of the space (BIM models, fly-through
animations, etc., are encouraged). All finalists will receive up to three complimentary fullconference registrations (a $4,350 value).

$10,000 grand prize
Following the live presentations, HCD Expo attendees will vote in real-time to determine which
project will receive Breaking Through's grand prize: $10,000. Winners will be named on-site. All
finalists' projects will receive editorial coverage in Healthcare Design magazine and extensive
public relations exposure.

How to take part
Individuals or teams may register online at HCDmagazine.com by Feb. 16, 2018. Registration
will require a brief description of the project, contact information, and a nonrefundable
registration fee of $495 (due with each project registered). Multiple projects may be
submitted. Vendors/manufacturers are not eligible to compete; see website for information
on sponsorship opportunities.
Instructions for preparing presentations for the first-round project screening process will be
issued to the primary contact. Presentations will be due no later than June 15, 2018.
The finalists named on Aug. 10, 2018, must submit their HCD Expo presentation materials
no later than Nov. 2, 2018. Projects will be reviewed by the editors of Healthcare Design in
advance, and finalists will be contacted prior to the event to resolve any questions or concerns.
