CONTINUING THE HAI FIGHT
WHILE HEALTHCAREASSOCIATED infections

(HAIs) continue to be
a major concern, statistics from the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention show that
numbers are declining.
In 2007, U.S. acute
care hospitals reported
1.7 million HAIs and
99,000 deaths during
hospitalizations. In
2011, those statistics
dropped to 722,000
HAIs and 75,000
deaths. "The industry

is going in the right
direction," says Shari
Solomon, president of
CleanHealth Environmental LLC (Silver
Spring, Md.), an infection prevention training
services company.
Solomon says several
factors have contributed
to fewer incidences, including Affordable Care
Act provisions focused
on reducing readmissions, concern about
"super bugs" related
to overuse of antibiot-

ics, and the industry's
growing awareness of
the issue and how to
combat it.
However, there's still
room for improvement.
As healthcare organizations look for new strategies to control HAIs,
Solomon recommends
considering nonporous
surface materials and
durable coated fabrics,
which retard absorption
of fluids, and seamless
furnishings that eliminate
cracks and crevices

where bacteria can
grow. She considers
such design features
as important as
aesthetics and cost.
"It's one of the things
we have to look at,"
she says.
Several new
no-touch cleaning
technologies, such as
UV light and hydrogen
peroxide vapor or
mist, are also gaining
in popularity. However, these processes
are typically used only

for discharge cleaning
when patient rooms are
empty and must be preceded by room cleaning
and disinfection. And
in the case of UV light,
Solomon notes that only
the surfaces exposed to
light are cleaned, meaning designers need to
consider room layout to
make such solutions as
successful as possible.
"It's all about awareness," she says. "And it's
all our responsibility."
