Project Wireless - February 2009 - (Page 3) viewpoint PrOjeCT By Christina Nickolas | cnickolas@hearst.com new concernS for wIreleSS hanDSetS n previous years we have seen a constant growth for mobile-device shipment. according to last month’s report from isuppli, the mobile-device market went down by 1.1% in the third quarter, ending with 316.7 million units, from that of 320.4 million units in the second quarter. the prediction for 2009 doesn’t get any better, as shipments are expected to go down by 5.6%. (http://www.isuppli.com/newsdetail.aspx?id=19752) economic uncertainty and layoffs are driving consumers to spend less or just hold on to their old cell phones. and who blames them. manufacturers are also playing it safe by being conservative in their sourcing and component procurement activities. i can only hope that this slowdown in mobile-device shipments will not have a big impact on the design and development of innovative wireless ic and components for handhelds. in the past, market studies for wireless ics all had positive indicators. in april 2008 databeans estimated that the communications analog ics revenue – coming from the wireless and wired broadband segments - will amount to over $72 billion for 2008 and grow to Contents viewpoint Smart integration design I | vOLuMe 1 | nuMber 1 $128 billion by the end of 2008. the company also predicted that the growth rate for the communications semiconductor market for the next 5 years will average 12% per year for revenue (http://www.databeans. net/reports/current_reports/assp_ communications.php) despite all this i do think the wireless electronic ics market will change in many ways this year as handsets become the main platform for everything from internet access, to social networking, gaming and navigation. i hope you find these articles helpful whether your concern is finding to shorten design time, selecting that antenna that best meets your system’s criteria, or smart integration design for handsets.
