The plaque honoring Heifer International’s founder hangs alongside matching plaques for Gandhi and Martin Luther King. West, who died in 1971, was a student at Manchester College and was later instrumental in establishing the school’s Peace Studies Department. Schrock looked back at the wars that punctuated the last century and said teaching young people about the possibilities of peace is the only way to bring about real change. “Dad is remembered for inviting, urging, prodding, perhaps goading folks to carry out his dreams to edge our world toward peace. He knew sending cows was a good beginning, but not enough,” she said. Heifer Uganda at 25 H eifer International Uganda celebrated 25 years of service on August 24, 2007. The theme of the day was “25 Years of Committed Par tnership for Sust ainable Livelihood.” Since establishing an office in Uganda in 1982, the Heifer International Uganda Program has helped many rural communities grow in solidarity and income. Uganda government officials joined visitors from throughout Africa for the celebration, which included commissioning of animals to projects, exhibitions, video documentaries, testimonies from beneficiaries, awards for the best farmers and recognition of staff.
