World Ark Magazine - January/February 2008 - (Page 6) THE GOOD LIFE TIPS FOR BETTER LIVING What Goes Around Comes Around You’re a devoted recycler, religiously setting out your glass bottles and flattened cardboard boxes each week for the recycling truck. But you’re probably still piling up other stuff that creates waste, like those foam packing peanuts, old eyeglasses or your second-best pair of running shoes. Isn’t there something you can do with it all? The good folks at Co-op America, a non-profit organization working to harness economic power for social change, have found some great ways to give your items a second life—and keep your karma in good working order. A few of the ones we like best: www.recycleplace.com pays from 10 cents to $10 each for your used-up ink and toner cartridges. www.collectivegood.com will recycle your cell phones and PDAs; some are refurbished for use in the developing world. The Scandinavian design store Ikea will recycle compact fluorescent bulbs; find the store closest to you at www.ikea.com. www.oneworldrunning.com distributes gently used running shoes to athletes in Africa and Latin America. Shoes that are beyond salvaging can be turned into athletic flooring; go to www.nikereuseashoe.com. GET T YIMAGES GET T YIMAGES Get the Lead Out Wondering if the paint in your old house contains lead, or if that cute plastic toy your kid got for Christmas might be doing her more harm than good? Home kits to test for the presence of lead are available at www.leadcheck.com. Be sure to follow directions carefully to prevent false negatives. 6 January/February 2008 | WORLD ARK www.heifer.org http://www.recycleplace.com http://www.collectivegood.com http://www.ikea.com http://www.oneworldrunning.com http://www.nikereuseashoe.com http://www.leadcheck.com http://www.heifer.org
