World Ark Magazine - March/April 2008 - (Page 45) Host Plays Chicken for Heifer Betsy Wilhelm is too shy to make a sales pitch, and the Baltimore-area Heifer volunteer gets uncomfortable asking people to donate money, no matter how worthy the cause. But she does know how to throw a pretty good party. And she likes chickens. So, when she and two friends decided they wanted to raise money for Heifer, a successful fundraiser came together pretty easily. Even if a headless chicken-shaped cake nearly dampered the festivities. With help from Beth Phelps and Stacy Scott, Wilhelm’s party raised more than $3,000 and helped to spread the word about Heifer International. As Wilhelm’s daughterin-law played harp music by the pool, 50 paid guests nibbled on curry-flavored chicken bites, a savory pesto cheesecake, animal-shaped gingerbread cookies and more. They also decorated cupcakes with coconut feathers and almond beaks to look like baby chicks. Then there was the chocolate chip chicken cake. Martha Stewart might have pulled it off, but Wilhelm couldn’t get it quite right. The fowl-shaped cake kept breaking at the neck. “The directions and pictures were OK,” she said. “But it didn’t exactly turn out the way I had hoped. The head kept falling off.” Luckily, Phelps salvaged the sugary bird with a floral garland that held it all together. For someone who doesn’t fancy herself a fundraiser, Wilhelm admits it turned out pretty well. “You shouldn’t be afraid,” she said. “People will come forward with pretty much whatever you ask. Just make it fun and something that you like to do. That’s what I was doing—turning something that I ordinarily like to do into making money for Heifer.” Heifer Theatre Project Have you ever had the pleasure of teaching a bright, artistically talented young person and wanted to help them develop their skills and deepen their passion for the arts? Heifer International has an opportunity for high school students to exercise their talents while learning more about how to change the world. For two weeks each year, high school students from across the U.S. and around the world gather at Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas, to live the lessons of world hunger and poverty, community interaction and growth in the Heifer Global Village. They use their knowledge and experience from the Global Village in workshops in writing, dance, music and drama to translate their experiences into an original theatrical production. Encourage a promising young performer you know to grow as an artist while making a difference this summer!
