So when the Russian woman began working at a rehabilitation center for disabled children in Nikolskoe Village near Moscow, she wanted to use her skills to improve the children’s health. A kind volunteer helped her build a cow shed at the center, but the shed stood empty because she had no animals. Luckily, Heifer International soon called on Ivanovna and packed her shed with 10 heifers, 10 ewes, one ram and one horse. The rehabilitation center also got 10 beehives to put on its new farm. Because she was raised on a farm, Ivanovna quickly started teaching the children how to care for their new animals. She also taught them how to tend the vegetables planted on the center’s small farm. Today, the animals provide the children with much-needed protein from their milk, and the horse is helping staff and residents keep the farm in good working order. www.heifer.org May/June 2008 | WOrlD Ark 43 http://www.heifer.org
