The sevenmember staff of this new program will be based in Freetown, the country’s capital city. Heifer will help rebuild communities, foster peace and improve nutrition. Sierra leone in West Africa is bordered by liberia, Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Once a refuge for returning slaves from the Americas, the country’s most recent history is marked by a war that lasted from 1991 to 2002. The country has been peaceful since, but a huge number of people were killed in the war, and many animals were lost. Makes a Difference One Water Buffalo in Cambodia Chhib Sam Ol, 52, and his wife Hean Rorn, 53, live with their daughter in the village of Chroy Svay Keut, in the Koh Kong province of Cambodia. Sam Ol was formerly a Khmer Rouge soldier but is now disabled. Before 2004, with no draft animal, he and his family were forced to survive on meager yields of homegrown rice and the few fish they could catch. They often faced food shortages for four months out of the year. Fortunately for Sam Ol, a Heifer project, Strengthening Village Animal Health Services and Sustainable Livestock Development, had begun in the area. In June 2004, after completing training courses on raising animals, composting, vegetable production and the Heifer Cornerstones, he received a water buffalo. As a result of the draft animal, Sam Ol was able to expand his farm and now has two acres for rice production and almost an acre for vegetable production. Today, he in Cambodia, Chhib Sam Ol and his wife Hean Rorn lead their new water buffalo to the rice fields. produces two tons of rice annually, enough to keep his family fed year-round. Story contributed by Uch Samphorne, field team leader for American Friend Service Committee. 44 May/June 2008 | WOrlD Ark www.heifer.org http://www.heifer.org
