World Ark Magazine - May/June 2008 - (Page 5) June 16: DAY of THE African Child In 1976, thousands of black school children in Soweto, South Africa, marched in protest of the inferior quality of their education and demanded to be taught in their own language. Hundreds were shot, and in the two weeks that followed, more than 100 people were killed; more than 1,000 were injured. In 1991, the Organisation of African Unity proclaimed June 16 the Day of the African Child to honor the spirit and sacrifice of these children. Water—it’s not just for drinking. It’s used to process your morning coffee as well as brew it; it’s in your beef as well as your beefsteak tomato; it’s used to make pants as well as paper. And just as we all have a carbon footprint, we also have a “water footprint.” To find out what your water footprint is and how you can reduce it, go to www.waterfootprint.org. The average Chinese uses about 185,000 gallons of water per year. The average Saudi uses less than 343,400 gallons of water per year. The average American uses almost 660,400 gallons of water per year. 40% Of All People… heif·er \'he-f r\ n : a young, female bovine that has not yet borne a calf. e www.heifer.org W AT E R FOOTPRINT of all food ready for harvest in the United States will never be eaten. Photo by Geoff Oliver Bugbee We should have known better. In the March/April issue of World Ark, we used the phrase “milking her family’s Friesian heifer” in a photo caption (page 28). Impossible, said a reader. Why? Because a heifer is, by definition, “a young, female bovine that has not yet borne a calf.” No calf, no milk. Thought you might be interested, too.
