Eco-friendly Seafood Selector While the health benefits of eating more fish have received a lot of attention in recent years, the environenviron mental effects of higher seafood demand have not. Overfishing exhausts the supply of fish and upsets the ecological balance. Take the Atlantic cod, also called scrod or whitefish, for example. Due to high demand, overfishing has steadily declined populations on the East Coast. The most popular method for harvesting cod is bottom trawling. This environmentally unfriendly fishing method consists of dragging a net across the ocean floor and can disturb or destroy habitat and capture juvenile fish before they have a chance to reproduce. Both Seafood WATCH, a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, Calif., and Oceans Alive, a program of the Environmental Defense Fund, have developed a Plant A Row Are you looking for a way to help end hunger in your community?
