But it is good to be precocious because we want to make sure people are safe as they eat food that has been genetically engineered. I believe we can save people from the food crisis by growing food that is adapted to the environment in which it is grown. In Africa, the staple foods used to be cassava, sorghum, millet—food crops that were adapted to the harsh, dry environment of Africa. In an attempt to improve food availability in Africa, corn was introduced. But corn requires a lot of water, so it has been fading gradually, and many people believe soon Africa will have to go back to millet and sorghum. So many people are suffering today because of this. We’re used to adopting foodstuffs from other regions and do not invest in research and development of food crops that are better adapted to the environments in which we live.
