World Ark Magazine - March/April 2009 - (Page 28) Heifer Hong Kong’s matching grant opportunity “brings great hope and encouragement for the affected families, and inspires them on their way of rebuilding their livelihood and communities.” – Chen Taiyong Children in Xinglong Village, a Heifer International project site, spell out “Don’t cry China, I love you” with stones decorated with flower petals by the riverside. “heifer hong kong’s match is a great sharing and caring from hong kong donors to the earthquakeaffected families and communities,” said chen Taiyong, heifer china country director. “it brings great hope and encouragement for the affected families, and inspires them on their way of rebuilding their livelihood and communities.” heifer hong kong, established in 2001, supports heifer’s program in china, and donors are impressed by the work done there, said Bianca lam, director of development and communication for heifer hong kong. when the quake struck, heifer hong kong and many of its donors were very worried about the safety of the heifer team in Sichuan and the project families there, lam said. “as the scale of damage was revealed by the media and communications sent by heifer china, the heifer hong kong board made a decision to adopt ‘Sichuan rehabilitation’ as the theme for most of our fundraising initiatives this year, including our two largest programs,” lam said. “although our fundraising work is still under way, we have received very encouraging results so far and certainly hope that by passing on the gift of a matching grant, donor communities in other parts of the world can be encouraged to play a part in rebuilding Sichuan, which is a challenging and long-term process,” she said. The quake killed almost 70,000 people, injured more than 370,000 and left 5 million to 10 million people homeless, according to news reports and heifer research. The earthquake was felt across much of central, eastern and southern china, including Beijing, guangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, Tianjin, wuhan and in hong kong. it was also felt in parts of Bangladesh, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Thousands of aftershocks, many above magnitude 5, have continued to rattle residents and complicate relief efforts. www.he i f e r .o r g 28 m a rch / ap r i l 2 00 9 | world ark PHOTO COURTESy OF HEIFER CHINA. http://www.heifer.org
